What is a pediatrician?

A pediatrician is a medical doctor specializing in the care of children. After medical school, pediatricians continue at least 3 years of residency with training designed specifically in the care of infants, children, and adolescents. Post residency, pediatricians who pass a comprehensive exam centered on the care of children become board certified by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Pediatricians provide preventative care for children to assist families in keeping their children well. Additionally, they provide care for ill children, who might be acutely or chronically ill. Pediatricians partner with parents and support families to ensure good growth, adequate nutrition, appropriate development, and great overall health of children.

Can I meet the pediatricians before the birth of my baby?

Yes. Please call the office for a prenatal consultation. We provide a tour of the office, answer your questions, and provide a one-on-one experience with the pediatrician. Congratulations on your new baby!

When is the first visit?

The first visit with the pediatrician is within 3–5 days of discharge from the hospital. We encourage parents to call the office on the day of discharge to schedule the baby's first visit with us.

When are the first vaccines given?

Your baby's first vaccine is given at the hospital. The next set of vaccines are given at 2 months of age. Please don't hesitate to ask more questions during your prenatal consultation.

How do I obtain lab results?

Please check your patient portal for lab results within 72 hours after a visit. If it is expected that a lab result will take longer than 72 hours, the staff at PPA will inform you. Please note that only negative lab results will be posted. Any positive labs or those warranting additional follow-up will be provided via a phone call from the physician.

How often should my child see the pediatrician?

While your child will see the pediatrician for sick visits, it is important your child be seen for well-child examinations starting as a newborn. These visits give parents the opportunity to discuss their child's physical growth and development, along with nutrition, safety, and behavioral concerns. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends well-child visits at 3–5 days, 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 15 months, 18 months, 2 years, 30 months, 3 years, 4 years, 5 years, and once yearly every year thereafter.
