Healthy habits start in childhood

If we can teach our children healthy behaviors, they will have a greater chance of becoming healthy adults. Try these tips with your whole family.

Dr. B's quick nutrition tips

  • Watch your portion sizes — saucer-size plates are appropriate for meals.
  • Fill half the plate with vegetables, and the other half with a meat and a starch.
  • If seconds are needed, eat more vegetables.
  • Drink a cup of water before and after meals.
  • Eat healthy snacks including whole fruit or raw vegetables.
  • Drink 8 cups of water daily and try to avoid juice on a daily basis.
  • Make smoothies with fresh fruit and add a few vegetables, like spinach.
  • Eat in moderation — too much of anything can be unhealthy.

Dr. B's quick exercise tips

  • Gather the family, turn on the music, and dance for 10 minutes.
  • Start a routine of 25 jumping jacks, 25 knee raises, and 25 leg raises.
  • Increase the time you dance or the number of repetitions, as tolerated.
  • Make it a family competition — who can dance the longest?
  • Have fun.
